![]() ![]() My question is whether or not the layered hardibacker and shelf brackets is sturdy enough for this size shelf or if the hardibacker will sag over time under the weight. I was thinking about constructing the shelf out of layered hardibacker and using three metal support brackets to support the shelf from underneath. The shelf dimensions are 5' wide, 8" deep, 2 - 3" inches thick. ![]() After consulting our local building inspector, it turns out that out desired shelf location will be within the thermal clearance zone above the firebox, meaning that the entire shelf must be non-combustible. As part of the project, I would like to build a mantel shelf and tiling it with ceramic tiles. We are refacing our masonry fireplace with dry stacked slate tiles.
